Flax Egg
Equipment
- Small Bowl
Ingredients
- 1 tbs flaxseed meal (also called ground flaxseed)
- 3 tbs hot water
Instructions
- Add together the flaxseed meal and hot water. The water does not have to be boiling, as hot as you can get it from the sink works.
- Let sit for 5 minutes, or until it has started to thicken up, and become a gooey, goopy texture.
- This makes enough to replace one egg, so scale up as you need for your baking.
This flax egg is a great egg replacement in many vegan baking recipes. It is cheap and easy to make, using only two ingredients – ground flaxseed and water!

This flax egg is super quick to make, just having to mix together the water and flax ground seed. It is gluten free and paleo, making it perfect for a wide range of diets. Also, flax seeds are great for you! They contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and many other nutritional benefits. Check them all out here!
This egg replacement is also great since it won’t add any unwanted flavours into your dish. It also doesn’t add any texture. I would only recommend to use this for baking, as when cooked into dishes its flax flavour will come through, as well as its mealy texture.
Make sure when you are making it that the ‘egg’ has a goopy texture. If it doesn’t, just wait a bit longer and it should get there eventually. I wouldn’t recommend making these ahead of time, as the texture can get hard to work with. Also you can easily make them right when you need them. A tip I learnt is to make them right at the start, so that way you don’t have to be waiting on them to goop up. As soon as you have decided to bake, toss this together, and it should be ready right in time to add in.
